Liskeard Guildhall – Redevelopment of Important Historic Building
Liskeard Guildhall is one of the town’s most significant and recognisable buildings, standing prominently at the heart of the town centre on Fore Street. Originally built as a market and courtroom, the Guildhall is a Grade II listed building and has played a central role in Liskeard’s civic, commercial and social life for generations.
Its location at the centre of Fore Street makes the Guildhall a key focal point within the town, both historically and today. Securing its future is vital not only for protecting Liskeard’s heritage, but also for supporting a vibrant and active town centre.
In 2023, Liskeard Town Council commissioned Le Page Architects to carry out a feasibility study to explore the conservation, repair and refurbishment of the Guildhall. The study was funded by the Good Growth Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Shared Prosperity Fund – Community Capacity Fund.
Following this work, Listed Building consent was granted in 2024, and the Town Council is now exploring ways to deliver this exciting and important project.
The aim of the project is to rejuvenate the Guildhall’s interior spaces and the former ground floor colonnade in a way that respects and enhances the building’s historic character, while also securing a sustainable and active future use in the heart of Liskeard.
The proposals focus on improving accessibility for all users, bringing underused spaces back into productive use, supporting the local economy and wider community and reinforcing the Guildhall’s role as a key town-centre landmark
Three commercial units are proposed at ground floor level. These are set back from the Fore Street elevation to recreate an open arcade along the front of the building, strengthening the relationship between the Guildhall and the town centre.
The main hall on the first floor will be largely retained as it is — a grand, high-ceilinged space with a gallery at one end — with works focused on conservation and sensitive refurbishment.
A new passenger lift is proposed at the northern end of the ground floor arcade. Its location has been carefully chosen to ensure it is highly visible and accessible, providing step-free access to the first-floor main hall.
New toilet facilities are proposed at mezzanine level to support users of the main hall. These will be accessed via a staircase located toward the rear of the building.
Further updates will be shared here and on our socials as the project progresses.
